Fashion Trends in Brazil Over Centuries

Women style at the first half of century XVI

Fashion has always been something people care about, especially women. Over the centuries, a lot has changed on what concerns to fashion in general. In Brazil, especially, we are able to see just how much the fashion standards have changed since its colonization till now.

In century XVI, the century Brazil was discovered by Portugal, what was trendy in here was dictated by the european countries. More specifically by what was hot in there.

In the first half of the century, from year 1500 to year 1550, women dressed mostly velvet dresses, with big squared necklines.

After that, on years 1551 - 1600, the english court’s style has influenced at the brazilian fashion scenario. Long flared skirts and puff sleeves were in style at those years.

At the following century, the fashion was a little more sober. The focus of the dresses were now on women’s waists.

In century XVIII, the dresses had frames, so they could highlight women hips.

In century XIX, the fashion patterns have started to be dictated by what was trendy in Paris: animal fur and shawls.

The following century, century XX, is known for being a very eclectic century, in which the fashion patterns have changed a lot.

At the first half of the century, in which occurred World War 1, the fashion continued to be dictated by France. Women began to show up at the job market and the clothing style has become more practical to fit in this scenario.

In the 50’s and 60’s, the fashion has been very influenced by what was trendy in hollywood, what the celebrities wore.

The decade of 1970 was a very eclectic one. Following the strenght of hippie movement, the hippie fashion was very popular, as well as flashy disco clothes. At the end of the decade, the punk movement becomes popular as well, and the punk style also influences in the fashion patterns.

At the 80’s, the punk style is still a trend, and Madonna, who is at the top of her career, becomes a fashion icon and influences girls all over the world.

The 90’s are known for being minimalist and very colorful on what concerns to fashion.

Century XXI hasn’t a “mark” on what concerns to fashion yet, like the past centuries do. Its fashion comes and goes pretty fast, mostly because of consumerism, which doesn’t allow the fashion trends to “settle down”. It’s important, however, to find your own style and stick to it, if you don’t want to become a slave of fashion.

If I had to pick a century to go back in time, based on it’s fashion trends, I would pick century XVIII or the first half of century XX, because I really appreciate their sober and classy fashion trends.
